• Worked in the internal audit department of Aviva Europe as audit senior manager in the financial management and actuarial audit department, conducting internal audit reviews in actuarial processes across Aviva’s European subsidiaries.
• Involved in the implementation of Solvency II EU Directive within the Aviva Group.
• Joined MUA in January 2012 as head of internal audit and was appointed CEO in 2015.

Lydia holds a Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) degree in Marketing from University of Nairobi (UON) and MBA in Finance from University of Leicester, UK. She is an associate member of the Chartered Insurance Institute of London (ACII) and a member of the Insurance Institute of Kenya (IIK).

Skills and Experience

• Lydia has a wealth of experience in the insurance industry not only in Kenya but the larger East African market. She previously served as the Regional Head of Medical (East Africa & Mauritius) in Jubilee Insurance between 2007 and 2011 where she developed the business to a clear market leader.
• She was the Chief Operations Officer at Jubilee Insurance Company between 2011 and 2014 where she provided operational oversight for the composite business.
• Lydia has served as the Managing Director and Principal Officer of MUA Insurance Kenya since August 2021. She previously worked as the Managing Director and Principal Officer of Saham Assurance Kenya, a position she had held since 2014. Her appointment in MUA was following the amalgamation of the General Insurance businesses of Saham Kenya and MUA Kenya.

• Started his career as Management Consultant at Kemp Chatteris Deloitte & Touche.
• Joined La Prudence (Mauricienne) Assurances (now part of MUA) in 1997 to manage and develop its health insurance department. He was appointed Chief Operations Officer (General Insurance) in 2004. He retained this post after the company’s merger with Mauritius Union in 2010.
• In 2012, he took over the responsibility of the General Insurance Underwriting Department. He was promoted to Head of the General Insurance in 2014.
• Appointed CEO Kenya & East Africa in 2016.
• Appointed CEO Tanzania & Regional CEO for East Africa in August 2021.

• Senior Counsel with over 30 years of experience. Founder and Senior Managing Partner of Waweru Gatonye & Co Advocates. Mr. Charles Waweru Gatonye is widely regarded as a “high-class and outstanding lawyer” in his field of commercial litigation.
• He is a member of the Law Society of Kenya, the National Advocates’ Disciplinary Committee, East Africa Law Society, international Commission of Jurists as well as the International Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. He is also a Certified Public Secretary.
• He previously worked in the office of the Attorney General and rose to become a deputy to the then Director of Public Prosecutions.
• He has had the singular honour to be appointed by His Excellency the President of Kenya as an Assisting Counsel to the Goldenberg Inquiry and was also appointed by the Central Bank of Kenya as lead counsel to the Commission of Inquiry into the sale and transfer of the Grand Regency, (the Kimunya Commission).

• He was appointed Director of the Phoenix of East Africa Assurance Company Ltd in 2018 and is now a director of MUA Insurance (Kenya) Ltd.
